Character study of Rose Quartz

I could be very wrong about a lot of this. If you think I am, I’d like to hear your interpretation of Pink Diamond. 🙂

I’d like to focus on her reactions to and mentality about love. It’s obvious she loved Pearl. (I lost it at “Don’t ever stop!” and then they almost fused akslajal) But I always wondered what kind of love it was. Because it was different from her love for Greg. Rose was always an authority figure and mentor with the gems. She didn’t have to be that way with Greg. Greg made her want a different life. Maybe it’s because that was something she hadn’t experienced yet or it just didn’t feel right with anyone else.

But Pearl did sweep Rose off her feet. She showed her things she hadn’t seen before. That’s bound to make you feel something. And I always wondered what Rose thought about Pearl’s reaction to her relationship with Greg. It was very blatant, obvious jealousy and Rose acted like it was totally normal. This is probably because as well-meaning as Rose is, she’s not very good at reading people. She was inexperienced and naive in a lot of ways. Plus, it was hard for her to be genuine. Maybe it’s just me but sometimes her reactions to Pearl seem more like “you’re sweet and cute and I’m proud of you. I’m glad you’re here for me” not “I’m in love with you” like it was for Pearl. Sometimes she treated their relationship very casually, especially after meeting Greg, and I think that’s what made Pearl feel the worst. She was farther gone for Pink than vice versa, in my opinion.

It just seemed very easy for her to fall for Greg (and I guess other humans before him) even when Pearl was right there still being supportive and loyal and lovely and all the sudden Mr. Music Man comes along and changes everything. I mean, I get it, Greg is a perfect human being, but you understand what I’m saying, right? Like Pearl has said, Rose was a little selfish but not on purpose. I don’t think she realized she was doing it. She was so used to her life as Pink Diamond and that probably changed her outlook on relationships.

It’s not that it was Pearl’s right to be with her if she didn’t want that, but a little explanation and communication would’ve been nice. She wasn’t aware how much she was hurting Pearl by not saying where she was and what she wanted. She thought everything was fine because we’re on Earth and anything can happen. Why not hang out with this human and have some fun?

Even when she wasn’t a spoiled brat, she was very…innocently entitled – that’s the best way I can describe it. She didn’t know any better. At first, she took her and Greg’s relationship for granted too. She treated it too lightly and that’s when they talked it out and decided what to do. If it weren’t for Greg, she never would have learned how to love like that. Up until that point, maybe she was still kind of thinking like a Diamond, just in her own sweet, innocent way. “These things are mine and they make me happy.” You can tell by how she seemed to view humans during the start of her and Greg’s relationship.

But really, her characterization makes so much sense. It’s amazing how she developed and learned but you can still see that young Pink Diamond inside of her who just wanted her own planet. I’m not sure if she was completely naive or the exact opposite. She didn’t understand how to treat people at first but maybe that’s because she’s so much older and experienced than humans. She thinks that since they haven’t seen what she has, they are simpler and young at heart. She thought she wouldn’t be able to connect with them fully because of that innocence. Until Greg :>

Rose seemed very free-spirited. She just wanted to experience life and love any way she could. And though she wanted Pearl and every other gem “below her” to be their own person and not give her special treatment, I think there was still a small part of her that thought of Pearl as “hers” but not necessarily in a completely romantic way. I can see Rose treating things, even people, in her life as something interesting that amuses her. I have no clue how to say this without making Rose sound terrible. It’s way more subtle than I can describe. Because Rose didn’t belittle people. She loved how complex life was. But at first, it must have been confusing for her when she was no longer Pink. Pearl was also almost dangerously loyal and has only recently started fighting for herself, not just her Diamond or Steven.

I love them all. They’re amazing. They were written perfectly. And they’re flawed in a beautifully human way. I’m not sure if I said this the way I wanted to, but I did find this post that does an excellent job of explaining Rose. I recommend reading that too ^^

So. Lars. | Steven Universe â˜…

There were new episodes of Steven Universe and they were great so of course my obsession resurfaced. One highlight of the new episodes was seeing Lars again and how much he’s changed since Steven had to leave him on Homeworld. I forgot some things about him and I watched this entire video compilation of every time Lars showed up so you don’t have to! I forgot exactly when he stopped being…terrible, and honestly, it’s kind of worse than I thought. It’s a very slow process, but I believe we’re getting there!

Throughout the first half of the video, Lars acts the same. He goes through stuff that other people would have learned from and subsequently changed their behavior. But Lars has such deep-rooted insecurities and issues with popularity that he pushes everything down, puts on a persona to seem “cool,” and hurts people in the process. When he’s supposed to apologize or recognize he’s being a jerk, his reaction is “Whatever, I don’t care” (when he does care, maybe too much, he just doesn’t say it). I do think he learned lessons throughout the show, he just never implemented any new behavior. This is why I didn’t like Lars. For most of the episodes he’s in, he wasn’t enjoyable to watch and the whole time I would be thinking about how Sadie deserves better.

It takes about 40 minutes of this video for him to actually learn a lesson and change. It took Steven switching brains with him for something to happen. He stopped saying mean things and was nicer everyone. But then he was too busy worrying about the Cool Kids and baking to really be “better” so…boy’s still got issues but that’s fine, I guess. He’s workin’ on it.

The interesting thing about Lars is he’s always been like this but there have also been little moments and hints that show he’s not all bad. Sadie knows him better than anyone because around her, he’s just relaxed and doesn’t pretend to be “cool.” (It would have been nice to maybe see that side of him more often but I digress.) Still, it wasn’t surprising to see him blow up on the Sun Incinerator. He’s had moments of weakness like that before when he hid on the spaceship or when his friendship with Ronaldo was ruined.

It would have been really great to see him progress and become the captain of the Off Colors. I do wish they included that somehow. But I have never enjoyed seeing Lars onscreen more than I did when watching “Lars of the Stars” and “Jungle Moon”! Because…he’s still a brat…but like, in an enjoyable way now? And he takes initiative, which is new and refreshing. He’s definitely more considerate than he used to be when you look at how he interacts with the Off Colors. Ever since becoming a pink zombie and wanting to be someone who deserved it, he’s shown growth. That episode specifically really is one of the most important when it comes to Lars’ development. He was hero.

The little things get to me. Him hugging Steven instead of doing their failed high-five thing or even “Bingo-bongo!” That was a nice touch. I like how some random, embarrassing thing he said one time has turned into his catchphrase. Thinking Sadie having fun was meant to spite him was a low point and I’m hoping we’ve moved on from that BUT ANYWAY. I really really really want him to improve even more.

Being in space and fighting for your life as an alien fugitive with new pink skin and a wormhole in your head on a planet inhabited by rock people is not the easiest circumstance to combat your insecurities in. I doubt he had time to really think “Maybe I shouldn’t care what people say about me. I’m a freaking space pirate now! Let them talk.” SO for now, I’ll give him a pass, but the next time we meet Lars I want things to be a little better because there’s so much potential for him. This could be a great story with wonderful character development or it could flop. He’s already had a lot of development but sometimes you can tell it’s still old Lars. Being a sly thief in space won’t excuse him from anything when he gets home.

My hope is when he gets back, everyone will be so glad he’s OK that he’ll feel comfortable enough to calm down and accept himself. Because the people in Beach City do like him. And now so do I!

Steven Universe Season 2 Discussion | (。♥‿♥。)

jiiq4k4I saw episodes “Say Uncle” through “The Answer” of season 2 in Steven Universe. Yes, I know, that’s not the full season. But that’s all Hulu has right now! Anyway, I wanna talk about it. So if you haven’t seen seasons 1 and 2 of this show, please do so before reading this.

Anyone still reading? Good.

While “Say Uncle” is not my favorite episode ever, I can appreciate it. (FYI I personally am not a big Uncle Grandpa person.) What I liked: the foreshadowing for an Uncle Grandpa/Clarence crossover, the fourth wall breaking, and this beautiful gif that came out of the episode:

Image result for our ship steven universe gifThat can apply to them in several ways… Sadly, there wasn’t much Sadie in this season. Therefore, not a lot of Lars either. I’m not a huge fan of them as a couple but I still missed them this season.

BUT! One cool thing we got was the ‘Story for Steven’ episodes! Yay, flashbacks and backstories! I admit, the first time I saw Greg and Rose’s love story, I thought it was generic, rushed, and a way to cater to the audience (please correct me if I am so very wrong). But in the other ‘Story for Steven’ episode called “We Need To Talk”, they addressed their relationship in a practical way, pointing out their differences and even mentioning how fast they moved. So that was cool.

Another thing that got highlighted (at least to me) in those episodes was Pearl’s obvious friend-zone-y-ness. It’s sad, really, how much she’s gone through. You’re told your whole life you’re just a decoration, but then comes along a beautiful warrior who wants you to help her start a revolution. You train yourself how to fight, win the war alongside your friends, and hope that beautiful warrior will love you back. But she chooses someone from a different species entirely and disappears. Well, not really disappears. Becomes half of her son whom she had with a human. Now your crush lives inside a half human boy you have to spend time with every day and not be creepy towards. UGH!

Pearl does seem annoying sometimes, but I get her now.

Lion wasn’t around a lot. I wanted more evidence for the “Lion is Rose” theory. Oh well. We did get Fusions, though! That was exciting. If you wanna see my post about all of the Fusions that have been in this show so far and what the gemstones look like in real life, CLICK HERE.

I didn’t mention in my season 1 review all of the things this show does to showcase different sexualities and gender identity. There are a lot of beautiful messages in this show about family and growing up, but I think the more subtle ones are the best. There’s Pearl’s crush on Rose, Stevonnie… Have I mentioned I love this show?

Something I didn’t love: the theme near the end during the credits. Those lyrics are very sad. Self-loathing, almost. I mean, I get the meaning behind “Nothing Like You”, but it is sad. It is a gorgeous song, though.

And I hate to say it because this opinion contradicts itself, but the way they handled Garnet this season was kind of…okay. I prefer the more mysterious, quiet, season 1 Garnet. Because we know she’s a Fusion now, that kinda stopped. Garnet was very exposed this season and talked to Steven about everything and was surprisingly openly emotional toward him, like, a lot. The reason this opinion contradicts itself is because….Garnet was very exposed this season and talked to Steven about everything and was surprisingly openly emotional toward him, like, a lot and it was awesome!!! But a smidgen out of character.

Anyway, “Keeping It Together” was a fantastic episode. I love Garnet and Steven scenes. And this whole episode was basically them talking. Finding stuff. And bonding even more. This episode had Garnet scared too. SCARED! Have we seen her this freaked out before?? It was heartbreaking and amazing all at the same time! The Garnet-focused episodes are always my favorite. Like “The Answer” which seems to me like a very fan requested episode (which was probably why they made it).

Fun fact – Garnet was technically the first Homeworld mixed race couple.

We learned a lot about Gem Fusions and Garnet and Pearl and Amethyst grew a little. Connie is using Rose’s sword now and is training to fight. Garnet and Pearl were fighting for a little while. And that episode ended in a way I should’ve expected. “I wish things worked out like they did in cartoons.”

Um. But. You are in a–Never mind. That’s another thing I admire about this show. It’s very realistic, though dealing with completely unrealistic things. It took multiple episodes for Garnet and Pearl to make up. Sadie wasn’t forced to sing in front of people, she’s just practicing on her own for now. And that is fantastic!

Peridot is now our…friend? I don’t know if I’m okay with that. She’s kinda annoying. She’ll help us progress and she’s adorable but still annoying. I guess that’s the point. She’ll grow.

The pacing between episodes confused me a little. We’d be chilling at home one day, planning a play (Jamie came back! And his crush on Garnet? lol) and the next day, we’re looking for Jasper and Lapis in the ocean. It was a little strange for a while how they wouldn’t focus on that for a couple episodes and then all the sudden be like, “Oh, we gotta find Malachite! Poor Lapis is probably exhausted!”

There were half as many episodes in this season than last time, so this isn’t fair, but I’m gonna say it. I prefer season 1. Season 2 was epic and touching and filled with a lot of great songs, but I got a soft spot for beginnings.

What did you think of this season? Did you love it like me, or could they have done better? Please, no spoilers for future episodes.

What Steven Universe Fusions & Gemstones Actually Look like

Steven_Universe_logo

SPOILER ALERT! DON’T READ THIS UNLESS YOU’VE SEEN SEASONS 1 AND 2!

After watching Steven Universe, I found myself wondering what the actual gemstones of all the characters looked like. So I looked up garnets, pearls, amethysts, etc. But then I wanted to know if the Gem Fusions’ names were picked at random or if they had a purpose. That’s what I will be showing you today. I think we should start with the very first Fusion we ever saw.

opalOpal_Gen_3_by_Lenhi

When Opal first appeared, I was so happy! These two have such different personalities, but that’s what made their fusion work so well (until it didn’t). I loved her weapon, her design, the way she spoke. It helps that the real gemstone this fusion was based on make sense. (And it’s my birthstone.) The colors of their gems are beautiful as it is, and the opal has all of them and more. Now, let’s move on to another fusion of the main three.

sugilite

Sugalite_PNGAh, Sugilite. The Fusion I was sure had two l’s in its name. Honestly, I thought the sugilite gemstone would be sparklier because, I mean, look at those first two! Bootiful! But, once again, the color palette made sense. I don’t think they picked these at random now. The creators, writers, whatevers of this show put a lot of thought into this and I can really appreciate that. I can also appreciate the next Fusion.

garnet

GarnetByKmesEverybody’s favorite Fusion/character/Gem/everything. At least, that’s what I’m guessing. You could be an Amethyst person, that’s cool. But, really look at this! Look at it. They’re all so pretty… I love it. I love it even more now. I could gush all day about this character and her gemstones, but I think the next Fusion should get the spotlight, don’t you?

alexandrite

Alexandrite_Current_Regen_by_LenhiAlexandrite was the first Fusion we saw made up of more than two Gems (that we knew of at the time. We didn’t know about Garnet yet). We didn’t see the dance, but we saw the final product. And can I just take a moment to say how brilliant this show is? Not just because the gems are all gorgeous, and the characters are brilliant. This is a fantastic show. And it’s moments that have Fusions like Alexandrite in them that really drive that home. Anyway. I’m getting carried away. Let’s move on to the last Fusion involving the main three.

sardonyx

Sardonyx_PNG_EDITThis Fusion made up of Garnet and Pearl is the only one I can think of that isn’t a combination of the gemstone’s colors. It’s more like their skin tones. Again, it’s very pretty, of course. And while Sardonyx was kinda annoying in the show, I can admire her. Just like all of these. Their combined weapons are probably my favorite part. But the final one I have here hasn’t shown her weapon. In fact, this Fusion doesn’t get much screen time.

malachite

Malachite_LenhiThe most destructive Fusion in this show I can think of is Malachite. Don’t let that bright color fool you! This Fusion is a prison. And a very dangerous one, at that. I don’t know yet where this will lead or how long Lapis will have to suffer through it, but nonetheless, I still have to acknowledge how cool their gemstone looks.

So there you have it! I know I left out Pearl and Rose’s Fusion but I don’t think they mentioned her name in season 2, so I technically couldn’t include it.

And I think we got a sneak peak of what Amethyst, Garnet, Rose, and Pearl look like together in that play episode. But we didn’t actually see them, we saw a shadow of a cardboard cut out in their shape. And we didn’t get a name for that one either. So she’s not here. 😦

Stevonnie also isn’t here, but I think their gem is just a Quartz since Connie is a human.

I hope you liked this. I made some of these in MS Paint and I took the best looking gems and pictures of the characters from Google Images. Hopefully you could see all of them. I had a lot of fun making this.

Anyhow, let’s get a discussion going! Please, no spoilers for season 3 and onward. I haven’t gotten there yet. Hulu isn’t very caught up. What do you think of these Fusions? Did they do a good job?
