I’ve Given Up On Gold | OUAT S5

 

Seriously, if you don’t watch Once Upon a Time, I’d suggest you don’t read this. Pick up the show, and when you’ve gotten all the way through to the end of Season 5, then we can talk. SPOILER ALERT! (This post also contains a spoiler for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.)

There’s a difference between Gold and Rumpel. I preferred Rumpel. He’s the shiny, more noticeably crazy one. He was funny in an evil sort of way. That scene when he first met Belle was hilarious! Do you guys remember when her dad called him a beast? I miss those moments.

Gold… I’m getting sick of Gold. They’re technically the same person, same Dark One, same coward. But he has just gotten terrible. Every time I think he’ll be better, nopenevermindwon’thappen! What really put the nail in the coffin for me was the Season 5B finale episode. The whole room was shaking, something bad was gonna happen, and Gold had to keep his stuff safe.

He basically had two choices: power and love. One choice was the Olympian Crystal, which he wanted to use for its power to free Belle from the sleeping curse. The other choice was Pandora’s Box, which has Belle and their baby in it. He hesitates, probably wondering which one is more important right now.

He picks the Crystal. And I am so disappointed. I wasn’t shocked but still disappointed. I have been disappointed with him before. His evil, power craving ways have annoyed me multiple times! In fact, one of my favorite things in the scene where Belle puts herself under the sleeping curse is when she tells him he’s not her true love anymore.

In the beginning, I absolutely loved them. “Aww! He’s the Beast! This is so cute! He’s like a triple, if not quadruple, threat. Crocodile, Beast, Dark One, and Rumpelstiltskin!” But even when his heart was completely pure he wanted to be evil. That’s when I really gave up. Belle deserves better.

I just want her to be happy. And I’m not sure if her having Gold’s baby will be a good thing. (I know she’s pregnant in real life and that’s why they wrote that into the show…but we’re talking about Belle right now! Not Emilie de Ravin.) I don’t want her to lose the baby. But at the same time, it’s his kid too. And he’s broken her heart many many times. And she’s given him many many chances.

He’s basically become Gollum. Just without the split personalities. He gets slightly better, Sméagol comes out for a while, but the Precious is too powerful, too tempting. The Darkness has pretty much consumed him. Rumpel chose power over Belle. That’s it. He’s gonna fall into a volcano soon, I swear. (There’s that LOTR spoiler!)

So, writers of OUAT, what are you trying to do here? Are you trying to ruin Belle, make her evil, or tell an inspiring story about a woman who fell in love but realizes she don’t need no man? Especially if he’s a bad person, and not to mention crazy. Are you trying to make him a better person or a worse one? So far it seems like the latter is true. There has been no improvement in his character despite having such a kind, loving person in his life that wants the best for him. I honestly have no clue where they’re going with Rumpel and Belle. But kudos to Robert Carlyle and de Ravin for doing such a great job playing them!

What do you guys think? Is he redeemable or is it Mount Doom for him?
